Ismarie's Traveling Clothes

This Blog is written by Ismarie Deeter who is a Haitian born fashion designer as well as a hair and makeup artist.
She designed all the outfits in the photos and the pieces were taken to Haiti where childhood friends of hers modeled her handmade clothes.
Ericka Sthubert  , a 14 year old Haitian entrepreneur and our last guest blogger did hair and makeup on the shoot.

Americans would be surprised that Haitians are able to make Haiti a better country without their help. You can’t depend on men for everything. It's important to try to be independent in every way possible, otherwise men won't respect us if we are dependent on someone else to give us everything that we need or what they think we need.

My piece of advice for girls that are younger than me, is try to go to school and work as hard as you can to support yourself someday. Focus on school more than you focus on boys, because some boys are bad news.

I think the most challenging part of being a girl is attention.
A lot of girls out there are in a bad position, because they didn't have the attention that they wanted from their parents or someone to show them that they are important in the right way.
Right now I'm most grateful about knowing that I have a future ahead of me. I’m grateful that I have God to lead me every step of the way.

I feel beautiful because I have Jesus in my heart, having God in your life is the most beautiful thing that you can have.
I feel beautiful because he fills me with love.
I want other women to feel beautiful about who they are because they are made by God and in his image.

My favorite part about designing these clothes is that there are be a lot of women who will feel beautiful wearing them. Honestly I was shocked when I saw them in photographs, because when I first started crocheting I didn't think that my clothing would go that far, and it was mind blowing when I saw them travel through photos. It was so beautiful seeing other women wearing them it made me so happy because they look so beautiful and confident wearing them.

A lot of people would be surprised to know that I fight for what I want in life, I work hard, I have a big heart, and I’m trustworthy, I want others to know this about me. I never use to have a dream or think about my future because of the way life use to be for me. I want you all to know that I'm not doing all these things alone and that I have God and my loved ones to help me get where I want to go. And I'm also telling you guys that what ever you are going through in life you don't have to do it alone

Lastly we wanted to end with an empowering message from one of our own Chicago Rabbit Hearted Girls (and Ismarie's sister)  Ismania Deeter:

Fat is bad.
Dark is ugly.
Thin is sick.
I simply don’t get it.
Growing up in a culture (Haiti) where people are not judged simply based on their size or any other physical characteristics that make them different, has taught me to embrace myself & every flaw that comes with it.

If I had a penny for every time I went on the internet to find someone (usually a woman) being body-shamed I’d probably be a millionaire.
If you have curves or gain a few pounds, you’re fat.
If you’re thin, they tell you to eat more or they assume you have a eating disorder.
Like WTF?
Aren’t our bodies ours anymore?

So what.
Some women don’t fit into the “box”
I get it
health is important.
As long as the person is healthy, they should not feel the need to be ashamed of their body.

It scares me to think that some day I might be raising a daughter who’s going to have to deal with the constant pressure to attain these unrealistic beauty standards.

News flash people:
women come in many different shapes & sizes.
Ever wonder how boring this world would be if God created all women the same size and all men the same size? He created all of us unique for a reason.

Stop shaming women for being fat or skinny.
Give the little girls a chance to embrace their bodies and feel beautiful in their own skin without the constant pressure to be like the models they see in magazines.
Stop trying to fit all of us in a box.

So, to anyone who struggles with body image or feels like they’ll never be enough because their body does not fit society’s standards;
I pray to God that you’ll see how beautiful you are.
I pray that you’ll try to see yourself through God’s eyes and let him define for you what true beauty is. You may not feel perfect, but Jesus says you are to die for.
Start believing it!
